Treatment of Genital Warts

One of fastest growing sexual health problem is in the area of genital warts which are located both inside and outside the sexual organs including the anus; these are highly contagious sometimes forming in groups which will continue to grow if left unchallenged. The human papillomavirus is the primary name for the various strains, also abbreviated to HPV; people are infected by sexual intercourse, oral or otherwise. Genital warts are not necessarily prevented by a person because they are wearing a condom and quite often they will pass on the virus without even knowing they have it; this is particularly true for women.

Worryingly is the length of time it can take for the infection to form them; sometimes it can be a few months or even many years.Once a person is infected, they too become a carrier, unwittingly promoting the virus. While there are many hundreds of strains of this virus, only one causes ano-genital warts: the HPV6 strain. Unless a woman is due for a routine medical examination by her gynecologist a woman may not discover the warts for some time hidden inside her genitals.

In the area near the genital warts growth, can be damper and women may have more discharge because the genital area is moist and warm, the HPV virus multiplies there very fast once they start to develop. The most popular treatment for wart removal is the use of liquid nitrogen which is applied at very low temperatures but a number of applications are usually required before it can be safely removed. Whether liquid nitrogen is used is for the doctor or dermatologist to decide as it is not suitable for all locations even though it is quite painless.

If liquid nitrogen cannot be used, medical professionals can use the latest laser treatment or alternatively the older but still successful, cauterization. You cannot permanently remove them as they often return and all methods are reliant on the location in the first place. One treatment that is relatively successful at removing genital warts is imiquimod as it helps fight the virus but new ones can still appear while it is being administered.

While imiquimod is generally effective there are times when it is unsafe so a consultation with the doctor is advisable especially when a woman is expecting a baby,it also has restrictions on it’s use inside the vagina and genitals or when the skin around the area is inflamed. This is a strong substance that has side-effects like many medications so someone using imiquimod needs to look out for coughs, blistering, aches all over and an itching in the genital region; a doctor would be able to elaborate on this.
